AFRICARAIL Program

Associated countries : the countries associated to the project are the BENIN, the BURKINA-FASO, the NIGER and the TOGO.

Concerned countries : other concerned countries are: Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tchad.

Executive summary

Building new double track lines to interconnect existing railroad circuits of Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo, from Niamey to Niger, linking the towns of Kaya (Ouagadougou) Niamey Parakou Cotonou Lome Blitta and Ouagadougou.

Estimated cost :

2 billions US $ (building 2,000 Km lines).


Target and objectives

  • Opening up the landlocked countries to the transport of passengers, goods and equipments from inside the Burkina Faso-Niger area to the bordering regions such as South-East Mali and Nord-West Nigeria.

  • Enabling a better exploitation of agricultural and mining resources from the inside areas.

  • Providing a train service between the ports of Lome and Cotonou.

On going work

  • Agreement between the States of Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo and Geftarail, for the creation of a concessionary company, AFRICARAIL SA.

  • Set up of Pilot Committee for the Geftarial project in Niamey (Niger).

  • Set up of the concessionary company AFRICARAIL SA, with headquarters in Niamey.

  • Final communication of the AFRICARAIL program meeting in Dakar, organized in the frame of the NEPAD (African Union).
